Simple labels added to contacts, such as 'VIP' or 'wholesale', used to group, filter and target them.
A tag is a short label attached to a contact. Unlike an attribute, it has no value; a contact either has the tag or does not. Typical tags include 'wholesale', 'new lead', 'event 2026', or 'needs follow-up'.
Tags are quick to apply by hand and easy to understand, which makes them useful for teams. An agent can tag a customer during a chat, a chatbot can tag everyone who chose a particular option, and a campaign can target a single tag.
Keep the tag list short and agree what each one means, or it will grow into hundreds of near-duplicates. Use attributes for anything with a value, like a city or a date, and tags for yes-or-no groupings. Marichi Talks supports tags on contacts alongside attributes, and both can be used to build campaign segments.
