A WhatsApp template category for one-time passwords that verify a login, sign-up or transaction, using Meta's fixed wording.
An authentication template delivers a one-time password (OTP) or verification code. Unlike other categories, its text is largely fixed by Meta: a standard sentence with the code, an optional security note telling people not to share it, and an optional line saying when the code expires. Links, media and promotional wording are not allowed.
Codes over WhatsApp are useful where SMS delivery is unreliable or where customers already live in WhatsApp. They also come with a copy-code button, and on Android, a one-tap autofill option, which reduces typing mistakes.
Send the code from your own system at the moment the customer asks for it, keep the expiry short, and have a fallback such as SMS if the WhatsApp message fails. Marichi Talks supports Authentication templates and sending them by API, and also offers SMS from your own approved sender ID in Zambia and Tanzania.
